HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-050 Designation of a City-owned Right-of-way to Honor Michael Moskowitz RESOLUTION NO. 2022-050 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA, CHANGING THE NAME AND DESIGNATION OF A CERTAIN CITY RIGHT OF WAY ON NORTH UNIVERSITY DRIVE (BETWEEN STATE ROAD 827/LOXAHATCHEE ROAD AND THE SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY) TO A DUAL DESIGNATION IN HONOR OF MICHAEL MOSKOWITZ IN RECOGNITION OF HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Michael W. Moskowitz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and earned a Bachelor's Degree from New York University and a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moskowitz relocated to south Florida and ultimately made his home in the City of Parkland, the City in which he chose to raise his family; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moskowitz was active in numerous civic, community, and political organizations including serving on the Homeless Initiative Partnership Advisory Board and sitting on the Board of Directors of the Community Health Purchasing Alliance and the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County; and WHEREAS, the Moskowitz, Mandell, & Salim, P.A. law firm was founded in 1985 by Mr. Moskowitz, and he represented numerous clients within the South Florida community and fought for causes of benefit to all Floridians; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moskowitz presented before the City Commission of the City of Parkland on behalf of clients countless times and always exhibiting professionalism while vigorously representing the interest of his clients; and WHEREAS, Mr. Moskowitz played a key role in the political landscape of his time, and generously contributed his time and talent to the community he loved; and WHEREAS, he will be remembered as much for his kind nature and his sense of humor as for his legal tenacity and political acumen; and WHEREAS,a request was submitted to the State Legislature to rename a portion of North University Drive (between State Road 827/Loxahatchee Road and the Sawgrass Expressway) (the "Street") in honor of Michael Moskowitz; and WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, through the enactment of Senate Bill 160, approved the Street renaming during the 2022 Legislative Session; however, it was later determined that a part of the Street is a City owned roadway requiring City approval for the Street designation; and 1 WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 5-3010 of the City Land Development Code, the City Commission is authorized and empowered to name or number any road, subdivision street, alley or other thoroughfare within the city limits and to change such names or numbers; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to approve the street designation for the City right-of-way along the Street to a dual designation in honor of Michael Moskowitz,which provides for the primary designation as Michael Moskowitz Drive and North University Drive as the secondary designation(the "Street Designation") in recognition of Mr. Moskowitz's contributions to the community. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The above referenced "Whereas" clauses are true and correct and made a part hereof. Section 2. The City Commission hereby approves the Street Designation for the City owned right-of-way along North University Drive (between State Road 827/Loxahatchee Road and the Sawgrass Expressway) in honor of Michael Moskowitz. Section 3. The appropriate City officials are authorized to do all things necessary to carry out the aims of this Resolution. Section 4. All resolutions, and parts of resolutions, in conflict with this Resolution are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. Section 5.
