HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-26 Objections to South Florida Building Codes RESOLUTION NO. 99-26 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING ITS OPPOSITION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A STATE WIDE UNIFIED BUILDING CODE WHILE SUPPORTING THE CONTINUANCE OF THE CURRENT SOUTH FLORIDA BUILDING CODE WHEREAS, the State Legislature is desirous of creating and implementing a unified building code applicable to all areas of the State, and WHEREAS, Broward County and southeast Florida have implemented standards including the South Florida Building Code because of the unique building standards required because of its proximity to severe winds, thunderstorms, and occasional devastating hurricanes, and WHEREAS, the residents, construction industry, Elected Officials, the insurance industry, and visitors are secure with the building construction standards as established in the South Florida Building Code; and WHEREAS, the political process and/or selective application or enforcement is not permitted under the South Florida Building Code which then results in high standards of uniformity in construction practices, and WHEREAS, the South Florida Building Code has been developed and modified as a result of hurricane experience to reduce the loss of life and property damage in coastal regions of South Florida, and WHEREAS, the current edition of the South Florida Building Code has adopted numerous recommendations by the Insurance Institutes For Property Loss Reduction such as impact standards, shutters for windows and more stringent roofing standards. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA, THAT: Section 1. The City Commission expresses its opposition to the implementation of a statewide building code. Section 2. It urges all local governments in South Florida to unite In opposition to any changes from the current superior South Florida Building Code. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to transmit this Resolution to the Broward County Legislative Delegation, the Broward County League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities and the Office ofthe.Qovernor. Section 4. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 1 9th DAY OF May , 1999.
