HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-47 Urging Broward Cty to Support Local Home Rules in Reference to AnnexationRESOLUTION NO. 93-47 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA, URGING THE BROWARD COUNTY LEAGUE OF CITIES AND NORTH BROWARD MAYORS AND OTHER MUNICIPALITIES TO SUPPORT THE CONCEPT OF LOCAL MUNICIPAL HOME RULE IN REFERENCE TO ANNEXATION; EXPRESSING THE POSITION THAT ANNEXATION AND CONTRACTION ACTIVITIES ARE BEST CONDUCTED AS PROVIDED FOR IN CHAPTER 171, FLORIDA STATUTES BY THE MUNICIPALITIES AND PARTIES INVOLVED; PROVIDING FOR FORWARDING COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE BROWARD COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Chapter 171 Florida Statutes is specifically designed to provide an orderly procedure for annexation and contraction activities by local governments; and WHEREAS, the City of Parkland and all other similarly situated municipalities are concerned that the process of annexation and contraction be conducted on a statutorily sound basis; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA: Section 1. The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are true and correct and hereby ratified by the City Commission. Section 2. The City requests that the North Broward Mayors and Broward County League of Cities adopt a Resolution supporting orderly annexation and contraction activities in Broward County through the Local Government procedures outlined in Chapter 171 Florida Statutes. Section 3. Annexation or contraction activities by special act which do not allow the local municipalities to properly consider annexation and contraction activities is contrary to the best interests of the citizens of Broward County. RESOLUTION NO. 93-47 PAGE 2 Section 4. The City of Parkland is hopeful that the Broward County League of Cities and other local municipalities will consistently apply and utilize the provisions of Chapter 171 Florida Statutes which best operate when annexation and contraction activities are done by the specific methods prescribed therein, rather than by special act. Section 5. A copy of the Resolution shall be forwarded to the Broward County League of Cities and the North Broward Mayors for the purpose of their adoption of a similar resolution and subsequent forwarding of those resolutions to the Broward County Legislative Delegation.
