HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-44 Opposing Flyover, West Oakland Park Blvd & SR 7RESOLUTION NO. 93 - 44 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A FLY- OVER AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST OAKLAND PARK BOULEVARD AND STATE ROAD 7 IN THE CITY OF LAUDERDALE LAKES, EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO THE EXPENDITURE OF $1,800,000.00 SET ASIDE FOR A STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF A FLY -OVER; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the intersection of 441 and Oakland Park Boulevard is the commercial hub of the City of Lauderdale Lakes; and WHEREAS, Oakland Park Boulevard and State Road 7 are existing six -lane, major arterials dividing the City of Lauderdale Lakes into quadrants and providing the traffic access to the commercial hub of the City; and WHEREAS, FDOT proposes to spend $1,800,000.00 on a study of the feasibility of the construction of a fly -over to move traffic across State Road 7 on Oakland Park Boulevard; and WHEREAS, each of the corners of the intersection are completely developed, with operating facilities, the acquisition of which would cost millions of dollars; and WHEREAS, the fly -over would isolate various existing commercial operators providing the commercial base for the City of Lauderdale Lakes; and WHEREAS, the construction of a fly -over would have the effect of rerouting thousands of vehicular trips past and over the commercial areas of the City; and WHEREAS, the expenditure of hundreds of thousands and perhaps more than a million dollars to study such a fly -over proposal would be a waste of public funds because of the obvious detriment which the construction of such a fly -over would have to the motoring public, the commercial operators within the City and the City's tax base; RESOLUTION 93-44 PAGE 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Expression of Opposition: The City Commission of the City of Parkland, Broward County, Florida, hereby expresses its opposition to the construction of a fly -over at the intersection of West Oakland Park Boulevard and State Road 7 and to the expenditure of any monies toward a study of the feasibility of such construction, believing the expenditure of such funds to be a waste of taxpayers' money. Section 2. Directions to City Clerk: The City Clerk is hereby directed to send true copies of this Resolution to the Broward County League of Cities, The Florida League of Cities, the Broward County Legislative Delegation, and The Director of the Florida Department of Transportation. Section 3. Effective Date: This Resolution shall take affect immediately upon its final passage.
