HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-14 Opposition to Land Use Amendments in Unincorporated Area RESOLUTION 92 - 14 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA, URGING THE BROWARD COUNTY PLANNING COUNCIL TO CONDUCT A THOROUGH RE-EXAMINATION OF ALL PROPOSED LAND USES IN NORTHWEST BROWARD COUNTY AND TO DELAY ANY INITIATION OF LAND USE CHANGES AT THIS TIME; THAT THE BROWARD COUNTY PLANNING COUNCIL ALSO RE-EXAMINE THE APPROPRIATENESS OF AN EXTENSION OF THE SAW- GRASS EXPRESSWAY INTO NORTHWEST BROWARC COUNTY AND PALM BEACH COUNTY; URGING THE BROWARD COUNTY PLANNING COUNCIL TO REMOVE THE AIRPORT DESIGNATION IN THE NORTHWEST SECTION OF BROWARD COUNTY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Parkland (City) have a vital stake in the future use of the presently unincorporated 1,777 acre area lying west of the City of Parkland, and WHEREAS, the City of Parkland has worked successfully in a positive manner with the major developer in approving the development of three major communities since the 1988 de- annexation of this area; and WHEREAS, it is the stated position of Broward County Commission that unincorporated land be annexed by adjacent cities; and WHEREAS, the City of Parkland considers such area due to its geographic locations and past history to be a natural annexation Reserve Area; and RES 92-14 WHEREAS, the city of Parkland believes it is essential to its future tax base and to the impact upon its City services that the land be developed compatibly with City's goals, objectives and policies; and WHEREAS, the presently adopted Broward County Land Use Plan for this incorporated area provides for future industrial and commercial development; and WHEREAS, the City believes that it would be in the public interest for the Broward County Planning Council to conduct a thorough examination of all proposed land uses in this northwest section of Broward County preserving the City's options to mitigate impacts that changes to the existing Land Use Plan would create; and WHEREAS, the City believes the need for a general aviation airport in northwest Broward County has not been justified; is incompatible with the residential character of the City of Parkland; is incompatible with the close proximity of the Everglades Wildlife Preserve and possible Palm Beach County landfill due to possible airplane/bird encounters; and WHEREAS, the City Commission also believes that it would be in the public interest for the Broward County Commission to remove the existing airport designation on the Broward County Land Use Plan; and RES 92-14 WHEREAS, these proposed Land Use Amendments have a direct impact upon the city of Parkland with respect to traffic, park, and other related infrastructure issues; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Parkland believes that any changes to the Land Use Plan other than removal of the airport designation, given the present circumstances, are premature other than the airport designation; and WHEREAS, the City questions the appropriateness of extending the Sawgrass Expressway into northwest Broward County and on into Palm Beach County; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF PARKLAND, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the City Commission urges the Broward County Planning Council to delay the initiation of any land use amendments to the unincorporated area adjacent to the City of Parkland at this time. Section 2. The City of Parkland City Commission suggests a re-examination of the appropriateness of an extension of the Sawgrass Expressway into northwest Broward County and on into Palm Beach County. Section 3. That the City Commission of the City of Parkland urges the Broward County Planning Council to remove the airport designation in the northwest section of Broward County. RES 92-14 Section 4. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS J~ 1992.
